“What is creativity’s actual role in contemporary British life?”

Author of Cultural Policy, Dr Dave O'Brien has written an article on creative workers and traditional labour power for the Guardian's Culture Professionals network site!

Dave O'Brien, author of Cultural Policy: Management, Value and Modernity in the Creative Industries (2013, Routledge), has recently published an interesting article on the cultural role and social status of creative workers on the Guardian's Culture Professionals network site. In his thought-provoking article O'Brien discusses whether it is socially accepted and financially beneficial to be a professional hobbyist, and what non-creative workers think about paid creativity.

Dr O'Brien is lecturer in Cultural and Creative Industries at City University London, UK. He specializes in cultural value and urban cultural policy issues and has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Liverpool, UK. His work on cultural value includes a recent secondment and report to the UK's Department for Culture Media and Sport, along with several conference papers and forthcoming research articles.

City University London is hosting a book launch to celebrate the publication of Dr O'Brien's new book, Cultural Policy: Management, Value and Modernity in the Creative Industries, on Monday,18th November, 2013. The event will start with a panel discussion with leading figures in cultural policy and creative industries research. There will also be an opportunity for questions and debate.
